Vintage Department Store Festive Gift Wrapping Scene Christmas Cards

Who remembers a classic mid-century department store? This design was inspired by my time working at the Maas Brothers Department Store in downtown St. Petersburg back in the ’70s. As a teen, I started out stocking, but my favorite memories are standing perfectly still on a podium as a living mannequin (trying not to giggle), and getting to model in one of their restaurant fashion shows. Then, after graduating from college, I was hired by Maas Brothers to serve as art director for their ad department. Fast forward years later, the building was renovated into the Florida International Museum. In a twist of fate, the exhibitions became a major client of my boutique ad agency in the early 2000s. All inspiration for this nostalgic Christmas card!

Writing Holiday Greetings On A Snowy Winters Day Christmas Cards

In celebration of our 20th year as the Retro Christmas Card Company this year, I illustrated this card writing scene. This is what I imagine all your desks look like at home when you sit down to write out your cards.

Warm and cozy inside, snacking on freshly bake Christmas cookies, while outside the snow is softly falling and the neighbors enjoy the season in all its frosted glory.

My collections brought into the scene; my Christmas card list book bought on eBay, my 1940s radio that sits in my studio, my Grandmother’s perpetual calendar and my father’s ink pen. The desk lamp is inspired by the Don Draper office set on Mad Men. One day I’ll finally get myself a Holt Howard Santa Mug.

Retro Cats Tree Trimming Scene Christmas Cards

In our house the tree trimming seemed to always fall to the women in the house. The boys were in charge of getting the decorations out of the attic, setting up the electrical, and clearing out the empty boxes after the halls were completely decked.

These girls seem to have their hands full managing the enormous aluminum tree and ladder, along with a litter of cats just bent on having fun at the expense of the shiny brights!

Do you get the feeling there is a chase about to break out at any moment? Look carefully at the stack of ornament boxes!

Merry & Bright Mid-Century Modern House

Another imagined dream house, a vision of the mid-century at Christmastime. Step back to a time when Christmas meant station wagons packed with presents, glowing picture windows, and the joyful excitement of arriving at a loved one’s home on a snowy winter evening. I can just hear the snow crunch on the driveway.

We’re still looking for our MCM Dream House, ’til then I’ll keep illustrating them to share with you.
